After a year trying to build the google rank for my web site I found out my site Host had put hidden links into my site that helped some of his other customer's sites but not mine. Thankfully I owned my domain name and had it registered somewhere else. That allowed me to find a company that was able to move my web site in its entirety to a new Host. Happy New Year!

Sandy do you mind telling us who your old website host was?
wow! I never thought a hosting company would do that!
Wow, I would take them to small claims court for the maximum allowed by law.
Wow. I'm interested in what company your working with? That's seems wrong to me.
I would be all on that company. We have to right wrongs that are before us.
That has to be soooo wrong? Glad it sounds like you are getting the problem straightened out.
A few links really shouldnt do anything to hurt you. They would have to be many, many links to actually do anything.
But if they were hidden and they were found by Google you may have been blacklisted. I would check because changing hosts won't help you then.
It is bad business either way, drop them like a hot potatoe. TODAY!
you have to watch that stuff -- it is out there for sure -- best of luck in the new year!! je
I believe from what I found digging arround on your website there is also something called linkmachine which is also not a good idea to use - automated reciprocal link building is also a no-no.
I was able to dig up the other company using my http://whois.domaintools.com account - and there appears to be a powerd-by link in the footer of all their sites which they build and depending on their terms of use they may, and probably do, have the right to put their links there since they built and hosted your site as a service. I wont post their name here as it may be slander to associate their name with such claims.
If you could explain more about the links in question or could prove this took place I would love to see it if in fact they are as reputable as they appear to be. I see where they've built several websites in your market area and have many of their clients on top of Google for competitive search phrases.
I wanted to respond direct to "webin" but I do not see a link to contact you or any contact info but I appreciate your work so I'll also watch what I say -
I was also concerned with linkmachine but was told through a question to Google that if the linked sites were real estate related it was ok. When a link is exchanged the webmaster/ administrator for the site is contacted and checks the link to make sure it's not bogus then the link exchange must be accepted. All that may not mean a thing anyway because somewhere I read that Google plans to change the way they rank sites starting this year. I believe it said something about using the number of times a site was visited, "but don't quote me".
I purchased the site components but put every single picture, word, information link or module in there and built what you see today while not having a clue what I was doing because Tech Support was out to lunch. I have found out during the past year that most of those components are "open source" free and were simply altered. Plus the fact they no longer host my site should equal no link to them on my site. Visually you see the link to the company but through the source you also see links to several websites in my market area who are at the top of Google.
I'm sure that they would not mind then that you remove their link. I looked at your source code and only see inline styling as well a single link -nothing unusual- but I also see an extra > at the end of <html>>
Harley, Thanks for your comment. I have been unabe to access that "footer" because it was part of an upper secret Admin panel which is one of the reasons I left that Host. There may be one link now but the others come and go and can only be seen through source. My new Host doesn't really have any "programmers" so next week I'll focus on getting the bugs out of my site.
